Russia pledges to continue to protect South Ossetia and Abkhazia’s sovereignty

In August, both Russia and the former Georgian autonomous republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, whose independence from Tbilisi was recognized by the Kremlin last summer, marked the first anniversary of the latter’s attainment of their long-awaited political sovereignty with pomp.
“Exactly a year ago, and precisely, on August 26, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as sovereign states. That decision, during that difficult moment, right after the aggression organized by the Georgian leadership, has served as a firm guarantee for the establishment of peace in the region and survival of these two nations,” Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said at a joint press conference with the South Ossetian president, Edward Kokoity, which was devoted to the historic red-lettered date.

“Certainly, there will never be a return to the past situation, as Russia henceforth intends to continue to render all-round political and economic support to both South Ossetia and Abkhazia,” he added. “And in this connection, I would like to once again stress, clearly and unambiguously, that Russia will never tolerate any attempts of revenge or repetitions of new military adventures in the region. We shall continue to closely observe all the trends and react adequately to them.”
