Russia and Turkey deepen mutual cooperation on energy with new agreements

Following the successful intergovernmental negotiations in Ankara in August, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan penned a series of joint agreements aimed at further strengthening the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries, first of all, in the energy industry, and also in other related sectors of strategic importance to both nations’ economies.
Commenting on the bilateral documents, Putin noted that the positive results of the concluded negotiations have shown that Russia, together with the Turkish government, is able to arrive at decisions that are capable of opening roads to new large-scaled energy projects.

“This is a manifestation of our mutual interest in the development of multi-facet partnership and our joint readiness to move our bilateral relationships to a qualitatively new, higher level.” From his part Erdogan noted his complete satisfaction with the present level of the bilateral relations, calling the further strengthening of these ties a top priority goal of the Turkish foreign policies. As an example, he noted the high-level of the trade turnover between the two countries in 2008 that stood at $40bln. “Today, Russia is Turkey’s No. 1 trading partner, while Turkey is Russia’s fifth trading partner.”
