Russia and the European Union (EU) are finalizing the specific terms and conditions of the new Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (SPA), following the sixth round of the Brussels summit of Russia-EU foreign ministers in October. The new agreement will replace the old accord, which expired in late 2007.
“We also discussed the terms of the new strategic partnership agreement. After six rounds of negotiations, the process is evolving in a constructive manner. The negotiators are moving on to harmonizing the concrete wording, and today we agreed to encourage the negotiators to look for compromise formulas and solutions based on a balance of interests,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
The parties also discussed the level of economic cooperation between Russia and the EU, and Russia's new Euro-Atlantic security treaty initiative, as well as preparations for an upcoming Russia-EU summit, due on November 18 in Stockholm.
