Russia extends the effective period of its Black Sea fleet base agreement by 25 years to 2042

Strategic Agreement

Moscow and Kiev have signed a strategic agreement that extends the duration of the Black Sea fleet’s base in the Crimea beyond 2017 for 25 years till 2042 with the right of its prolongation for another five years, if one or both sides do not want to terminate the contract. “This agreement brings certainty to the fleet’s operations and normalization of the situations in the Black Sea region,” the Russian president noted. From his part, the Ukrainian president also highly rated the agreement, calling it an integral part of the Kremlin’s initiative on strengthening collective security in Europe.
