Finnish food group Atria expanding its meat-processing business in Russia

Last month, the management of the Finnish Atria Group in the presence of VIP guests opened one of the most advanced meat-processing factories in Russia in a colorful ceremony that took place in the Gorelova industrial park in the Leningrad Region. The occasion was personally graced by Matti Tikkakoski, the President and CEO of Atria Plc, and Leningrad Region Gov. Valery Serdyukov, while Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen sent his congratulatory message via online video and Ilya Klebanov, the representative of the Russian president in Northwest Federal District, sent his message in a more traditional way. Today, Atria is the largest foreign meat-processing company in Russia.

The new industrial and logistics complex completely belongs to Atria, which also already owns two other meat-processing companies in Russia – Pit-Product and Campomos. The complex, which has a total area of 22,000sqm, was designed and built by UIT LenTek, the St. Petersburg-based subsidiary of UIT, the largest construction firm in Finland. The complex, the most advanced meat-processing factory in Russia today, in terms of technology, will double Atria’s production capacities in the region. Atria Russia has invested about 70mln euros in the Gorelovo production plant

Commenting on the opening of the new complex, Juha Ruohola, Astria’s vice president in Russia, noted that the new facility will not only increase the company’s industrial potential, but also improve production’s stability, quality and safety parameters in Russia, thanks to its high level of automation. “An effectively functioning logistics center, combined with a pool of its vehicles, will guarantee the reliability of deliveries and provide competitiveness for the company in St. Petersburg and Moscow.”

Ruohola says the commissioning of the complex will also boost more precise specialization in Atria’s two industrial platforms in the Leningrad Region. The main products that will be produced at the Gorelovo complex will be frankfurters and grill sausages, while the plant in Sinyavino will specialize in the production of cured sausages. In 2009, Atria Russia’s turnover stood at 113mln euros and a staff of 2,000 employees.
