Slovak president says energy issue strategic in Bratislava’s relationships with Moscow

Speaking at an official dinner organized in honor of the Russian leader’s visit to Bratislava, Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic called the cooperation in the energy sphere a key component of the Slovak-Russian relationships. The two leaders later signed over ten documents on deepening their existing bilateral cooperation. “We see as a basis of policy on the European energy security issue an approach that guarantees equal benefits for producers, transistors and end consumer of energy,” Gasparovic added.

Today, Russia supplies Slovakia with about 6mln tons of oil and over 6bln cubic meters of natural gas per year, which practically cover all the Balkan nation’s energy needs. On the other hand, Slovakia plays an important role in transiting Russia’s export of its hydrocarbons to Europe, pumping over 50bln cubic meters of gas through its territory per year.
