Commenting on the power change on Downing Street, 10, Konstantin Kosachyov, the chairman of the Russian State Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee, has expressed cautious optimism over probable improvement in diplomatic ties with Great Britain that are currently at their the lowest point today. However, the State Duma’s ‘chief diplomat’ specifically blamed London for the sharp deterioration in the bilateral diplomatic relations with Moscow. The change on Downing Street followed the May 6 elections, which led to a hung parliament.
Though the conservatives, led by David Cameron, could not gain the majority mandates, they, however, were still able to form a new government after securing a coalition with the liberal democrats led by Nick Clegg, who has some Russian roots in his pedigree. “The change in government has given hope for the improvement of relations and condemned the excessive focus on our mutual disagreements to the past,” Kosachyov noted. He, however, noted that the relationships between London and Moscow are complex, with some of the current contradictions having systemic and fundamental nature.
