Alexander Zhukov, the new president of Russia’s National Olympic Committee (NOC), has outlined the organization’s strategic mission under his watch – to do everything possible and necessary to ensure successful performances by Russian athletes at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. “To attain this goal, we will, like the Canadians did, have to create special programs that will enable our athletes to perform very well.” Zhukov believes that hosting the Olympics in Sochi will help solve most social problems in Russia, including in public health sector.
“The Sochi Olympics is not only an opportunity for us to achieve sport victories, but goes far beyond. We are confident that it will leave a good heritage in terms of development of mass and competitive sports,” he added. Zhukov, who also currently doubles as a Russian deputy prime minister, was elected as the new NOC chief in May following the forced resignation of his predecessor, Leonid Tyagachyov, over the national teams’ worst ever performances at the Vancouver Olympics earlier this year.
