Minsk and Moscow’s strategic relations untainted by the explosive gas pricing dispute

The recent gas debts conflict between Russia and Belarus will not lead to a breakdown in the strategic ties between Minsk and Moscow, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko told the Euronews. “It will be wrong to say today that there is a breakdown in our strategic relations. This is because ‘big politics’ does not tolerate any turns, especially sharp ones.” He also noted that Belarus does not have real alternatives to partnership with Russia.

“Let’s be objective, do you think that EU is waiting for Minsk with open arms? Besides, EU is so much occupied today with its members’ problems that it does not have time for other countries.” He also noted that that some of EU’s demands are not acceptable to Minsk. “Belarus is an independent sovereign state, whose citizens want to live in their country and be in peace with their neighbors, which are Russia on one side and the EU on the other.”
