Moscow and Washington set deadline for completing Russia’s WTO negotiations

The U.S. and Russian leaders have pledged to ask their representatives to finalize their negotiations on Russia’s WTO membership bid this autumn. “Russia belongs in the WTO. This is good for Russia, for the United States and the world economy,” U.S. President Barack Obama said, adding that 99% of the issues have been resolved, while the remaining 1% represents difficult issues for both parties to resolve.
“We have declared our commitment to accelerate efforts and complete this process this autumn,” he added. Russia has been bidding for the WTO membership since 1993, making the bid a record, as the WTO’s membership procedure usually takes 5-7 years.
Stumping again for the WTO membership, President Medvedev expressed hope that the United States will fulfill its promises this time around and help resolve the issue by the end of September.
