Russian Northern Caucasus leaders headed by Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov have called for changing the title ‘president of republic’ to the more traditional name of the ‘head of a Russian region.’
Kadyrov said the move is aimed at ending the ‘parade’ of regional presidents in Russia. “I make this proposal from the understanding that there should be only one president in Russia, and that is the Russian President, while regional leaders can called ‘heads or governors, etc.,” he added, noting that he is ready to accept any term designating the post a regional head, except for ‘president’.”
Expressing his support for this ‘initiative from below,’ Ingush President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov noted that he personally prefers the title ‘head.’ “Personally, I believe that the best variant is the ‘head of republic.’ This title is clear and more traditional, and does not break some one’s tongue.”
