Business globalization is key to developing robust ties among nations

Hugues Laurent, the business development director at FM Logistic in Russia, the local subsidiary of the France-based FM Logistic Group, recently spoke TRCW about the company’s operations, its future plans for the Russian market and role in further boosting bilateral business ties between Russia and France.

On foreign businesses’ role in promoting relations among countries

The economic growth and development of French companies in Russia is necessarily one of the keys to promoting rapprochement between people. It makes people understand the way others think and work. This works in both directions: FM logistic has learnt a lot from its long experience in Russia. Mutual cooperation is one of the cornerstones of the international development of our company, which is now present in 13 countries and expanding further. We also hope that our Russian employees and partners are familiar with the French roots of FM Logistic Group.

On assessment of today’s Russian-French bilateral ties

Indeed, our company has long ago decided to invest in and trust the Russian market. Today, FM Logistic has more operations on the international markets than on its domestic French market. This is because, despite the fact that its key customers in the cosmetics retail industry are French companies, the company also has established productive cooperation with several German, U.S., Japanese and Russian partners. It is true that the high level of relations between Russia and France are built on historical, political and cultural experiences, which, a priori, means that companies can enter these markets with a relative ease. However, the main reason for our economic success is our ambitious goal-oriented strategy founded on the willingness to always move forward, making investments into different projects, including into the construction sector. Here, one’s nationality does not play a very important role.

On company’s competitive advantages in Russia

“I would say that our success recipe comprises a hard working spirit, excellent corporate values, respect for and understanding of customers’ needs.”

One of these is our experience. FM Logistic has just celebrated its 15th anniversary in Russia. Over this period it has used its entire how-know to adapt and improve its operations on this market. This experience is the proof of the quality and reliability of our services for customers, who have entrusted us with their logistics operations. The second is long-term orientation. On a market, which has often been oriented towards short-term profitability, FM Logistic has built a long-term client relationship that is based on the satisfaction of customers’ daily business needs. At the roots of our company are strong values based on a human-oriented approach, a policy that does not only differentiate us from others, but also give us a competitive advantage. The third factor is our supply chain approach. We are imaginative and permanently developing new and better solutions. As a logistics oriented company on the Russian market, FM Logistic has to continuously ‘perfect’ itself and improve its activities in this direction.

On company’s sparkling success recipe

It is really difficult to explain one’s success with customers and the reasons for securing their confidence. This is why I think that clients are, probably, in a better position to explain such phenomena. But, in our case, the first explanation might be found in our strategy, and, accordingly, the capability to invest. Internationalization has come at the right time and into the right country. The decision to come to Russia 15 years ago was a brilliant idea, but you can’t imagine how really difficult it was to put it into practice. In conclusion, I would say that our success recipe comprises a hard working spirit, excellent corporate values, respect for and understanding of customers’ needs.
