Russia and Iceland searching for new ways of boosting cooperation in new spheres

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Olafur R. Grimsson, the president of Iceland, discussed at sidelines of the International Arctic Forum issues of international cooperation in the Arctic Region, the ways to boost trade turnover, which nosedived to historical minimum during the current crisis, and mechanisms for establishing cooperation in the spheres of renewable energy sources and use of geothermal resources for production of the electricity.

“The relations between our countries have been developing without pauses. Unfortunately, during the crisis the volume of trade turnover took a hit. But I hope in the near future it will be restored back to its pre-crisis level,” Putin noted.

From his side, Grimsson especially noted his country’s longstanding friendship with Russia that has developed over decades, the density of trade and economic relations that have created a formidable foundation for further cooperation. “In this regard, I would like to note two areas: use of geothermal resources for production of clean electric power, and cooperation in the field of aviation. “We would like to come with our knowledge, experience and technologies, including foreign investments, to help develop modern infrastructure in Russia.”
