Oscar-winning film director Nikita Mikhalkov has published a political manifest, titled, “Right and Truth,” calling on Russia to do away with liberal democracy in favor of ‘enlightened conservatism’. The famous film director said the euphoria of liberal democracy has ended. “People are tired of listening to declarations of political independence, appeals to individual freedoms and fairy tales of a free-market economy,” he added.
“Our current social order represents an explosive mix of West-chasing liberal modernization, nepotism of local authorities and widespread corruption, which is abhorrent to the majority of Russians,” he said. “Our traditional and archaic public relations are being masked by ‘parade’ of economic reforms and ‘facade’ of liberal institutions.” Mikhalkov noted that national history teaches that all major reforms aimed at modernizing Russia were successful only where there were statesmen and public forces of centrist, enlightened-conservative orientation in the country.
