Russia intends to protect domestic companies after joining the WTO

Local Market Protection

Russia, after gaining an admission to the World Trade Organization (WTO), plans to fully retain all the possibilities and tools in its arsenal, including special protective, antidumping and countervailing measures, to support and protect local goods and services producers. Thus, speaking in June at a meeting on Russian position on WTO, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin stressed that WTO membership does not automatically open the local market to foreign goods and services. “All sensitive positions will be protected by higher customs tariff rates, and in doing so, Russia will act strictly in accordance with the WTO rules.”

The prime minister also noted the solid progress made in the ongoing negotiations on Russia's WTO membership, expected later this year. “During our negotiations with our partners, all the complicated and controversial issues were resolved on a bilateral basis, including those related to Russia's participation in the Customs Union."
