S7 Airline confirms cancellation of Boeing Dreamliner purchase contract

Russian airline S7 has confirmed its cancellation of a contract to purchase 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The contract, valued $2.4bln with an option to acquire 10 more planes of the same model, was signed in 2007, with the first delivery scheduled for 2014. Dreamliner, the latest product of Boeing, has been hailed as the ‘future’ of long-haul passenger aviation, an assessment that has generated high demand for the aircraft among potential buyers. Now, it seems the global crisis is making amendments to those plans. However, S7 says “it is still interested in the aircraft and is currently seeking ways of acquiring it through a leasing scheme.” Commenting on S7’s decision, Boeing’s PR Director Dmitry Khrol expressed regret over the contract cancellation on economic grounds. “We are continuing consultations with S7, which continues to remain a key client.” However, a similar contract between Boeing and Aeroflot, which envisages the latter acquiring 22 Dreamliners, has remained intact, according to Aeroflot Deputy CEO Lev Koshlyakov. “Nothing has changed, except for a shift in delivery schedules from 2014 to 2016.”
