On receiving Russian Chief Prosecutor Yuri Chaika’s report on the growing threat posed by Somali pirates to merchant ships on the Aden Gulf, President Medvedev asked the country’s chief legal custodian to examine all the legal ways, including the possibility of commissioning of a special international court, for bringing the pirates to justice.
This issue landed on the Kremlin’s agenda in May after the Russian Navy’s antisubmarine ship Admiral Panteleev seized some Somali pirates, and did not know what exactly to do with them. The pirates often go scot-free due to the absence of normal political authorities in Somalia and functioning international laws. Chaika pledged to discuss the proposal with his counterparts in other countries.
