The Moscow City Hall’s assurances that city hotels will not hike prices during the Eurovision Songs Contest were fated to fail, thanks to the hoteliers’ congenital greed. “All the requirements on hotels’ pricing policies will be observed,” Deputy Mayor Valery Vinogradov promised in April.
However, the hoteliers, circumventing their ‘gentlemen agreements’ with the Mayor’s Office, hiked their prices, at least, by 20-30%, making accommodations unaffordable for most of the Eurovision Songs contestants and fans.
Official reactions were also swift, as the Federal Antitrust Agency filed cases against several hotels, including Budapest, Peter 1, Mospromstroi Management Hotel and President Hotel, accusing them of engaging in ‘cartel pricing agreement’ during the competition.
