Putin appoints new cabinet to oversee pressing reforms

Russian President Vladimir Putin last week endorsed the new national cabinet, led by new Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, as a part of his reform policies aimed amongst other strategic goals at transforming the country and increasing the citizens’ standard of living.

The new cabinet includes several new faces, while the key members of the previous government of ex-Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, such as Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Internal Affairs Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev and Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, retained their positions, though the latter lost his first deputy premiership title.

This position now belongs to Andrei Belousov, who previously the economic adviser to the Russian president. Apart from Belousov, there are nine other deputy prime ministers in the new government, one less than in the previous cabinet.

The new faces in the new cabinet, apart from the prime minister, previously the head of the country’s federal tax agency and a technocrat devoid of any political ambitions, also include the new ministers for justice, sport, education, health and economic development.

The new cabinet has been tasked with fast tracking the execution of the multi-trillion ruble overhaul of the country that will involve practically all aspects of life, full digitalization of the local economy from 2019 to 2024 at an estimated budget of not less than RUB 1.63trn; raise the living standards of the citizens and pursue other policies that failed to materialized under the previous government.
