Le Pen ready to recognize Crimea as Russian region and repeal anti-Russian sanctions

Marine Le Pen, the head of the French party, National Front, and a key contender for the French presidency in the upcoming election, has announced her readiness to recognize Crimea as a legitimate Russian region in case of victory.
She has also promised to advocate for the abolition of the EU’s anti-Russia sanctions introduced by Brussels against Moscow following the events in Ukraine.
France's presidential election will be held in two rounds on 23 April and 7 May 2017. The National Front leader has a high chance of winning the election, because she, according to various polls, is expected to at least reach the second round.
In an interview with the local Izvestiya daily newspaper, Len Pen noted that she was also ready to recognize the result of the referendum, which showed the consent of the Crimeans to join Russia, and consequently recognize the region as as a part of Russia.
“The affiliation of Crimea to Ukraine was only an administrative issue during the Soviet era, as the region was [historically] never a part of Ukraine,” she noted.
The National Front leader also expressed regret at the refusal of the international community, including the UN, to officially recognize the Crimeans' decision, expressed at the referendum, to be a part of Russia.
According to the official data, more than 95% Crimeans voted for the reunification of their region with Russia at the referendum, which took place in the spring of 2014 after the coup d’etat in Kiev that followed months of antigovernment protests across the country.
