Speaking at the sidelines of the L’Aquila G8 Summit in Italy, Arkady Dvorkovich, the adviser to the Russian president on economic issues, said Russia will not sacrifice its economic growth for the sake of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 80%.
This statement was Russia’s official reaction to the declaration of Swedish Prime Minister Frederick Rainfeldt that the G8 in Italy had reached an agreement on global reduction in the emissions of carbon dioxide gas in the air by 50% by 2050, while more industrially developed nations, including all the G8 members, should try to reduce their emissions by that deadline by as much as 80%. “For Russia, such figure is totally unacceptable,” he added.
Dvorkovich noted that the position of the G20 on this issue is that if the global objective of slashing greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2050 is endorsed by all nations, then the developed countries will be ready to support such reduction by reducing their emissions by 80% by 2050.
