Speaking in Brussels last month at a meeting with European Commission President Jose M. Barrosso, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he feared that the rising influence of Islamic radicalism in North Africa and Arab world would have negative implications for Russia’s North Caucasus.

Mass national protests have been going on for weeks in several Arab states, prompting the falls of the ruling regimes in Egypt and Tunisia. “We are seriously worried over the possibility of these events negatively impacting on the situation in our North Caucasus.”
