Russian president arrives in Italy to further boost bilateral strategic ties

MILAN, Italy — Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, currently on a working visit to Italy, has held highly productive negotiations with Prime Minister SilvioBerlusconi aimed at further deepening and boosting the depth and scope of the already high level of strategic partnership between Moscow and Rome.

This time around, the negotiations between the two leaders took place not in Rome, but in Milan, which frequently serves as the country’s unofficial capital. The agenda included a broad scope of issues of bilateral and international importance, starting from further development of mutual relations in both nations’ economies, modernization of their energy industries, joint efforts in such spheres as transportation, public health, environmental protection to acute international issues of geopolitical importance.

Specifically, both parties also discussed the issue of signing a new strategic agreement on European security, a policy initiated by the Russian side, as well as other issues relating to today's relationships between Russia and EU and Russia and NATO. The talks also focused on the Middle East conflicts, the real situations in Iran and Afghanistan as well as probable ways of exit from these crises.
