Medvedev presents Russia’s $1.4trln postcrisis economy to Davos audience

DAVOS, Switzerland — Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, forced by the deadly suicide blast at the Domodedovo Airport to significantly to reduce his previously heavily scheduled events and programs at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the Swiss resort city of Davos, where he was to give a keynote address, from two full days to few hours, painted his country as one of the most attractive destinations for global business and investments in the looming postcrisis era, often referred to as the new reality, which coincidentally, was the forum’s title.

Parts of the president’s address were focused on his government’s commitment to openness, technological development and attracting international talents to Russia. “Our task is to turn Russia into a more attractive place for the best minds in the world. One of the ways to achieve this is the government’s plan to set up a special fund with foreign investors to help insure against risks on foreign investments in the country,” he noted.

The president also touched on his other top priority policy strategies, including the Kremlin’s ongoing plans for modernizing the local economy and boosting its global competitiveness. “I would like to note that Russia indeed faces many difficulties in building the rule of law, an efficient and modern economy Russia faces many difficulties in building the rule of law and creating a modern economy. Though we have yet to reach outstanding results in our efforts, we are, nevertheless, full of resolve to persevere,” he said.

Stressing his willingness to learning and listening to friendly advice, the president, however, openly made clear what Russia does not need from friends and partners - unnecessary lecturing on how to run Russia, build effective democracy and modern corporate rules for businesses in the country.
