THE VATICAN, Italy — President Dmitry Medvedev in February had an audience with Roman Catholic Church Pope Benedict XVI, the Russian leader’s first official visit to the Vatican after the formal establishment of full-fledged bilateral diplomatic relations between Russia and the Roman Catholic Church some years ago.

During the meeting, the Pontific and Medvedev confirmed their ongoing broad and booming cooperation in promotion of both human and Christian values as well as interactions in other spheres.

They also expressed satisfaction in the current level of bilateral diplomatic relations and readiness for boosting joint efforts aimed at further strengthening of these ties. Apart from bilateral cooperation, the leaders also discussed vital geopolitical issues, specifically, the volatile situations in the Middle East.
