Russia and Spain agree to cooperate on Sochi Olympics and FIFA World Cup projects

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin received with the highest diplomatic honors the King of Spain Juan Carlos I, who was in St. Petersburg to participate in the official launch of the Year of Russian-Spanish Cultures and Languages in 2011.

During the talks, both leaders noted that their countries have lots of interesting and perspective projects in all aspects of bilateral cooperation. As an example, Putin cited Moscow’s huge interest in establishing mutually beneficial cooperation with Madrid in the development of Russia’s infrastructural projects for the FIFA World Cup football compeition finals slated for 2018.

From his part, the Spanish monarch acknowledged Madrid’s readiness to participate not only in the development and preparation for the World Cup, but also in the realization of other key projects being built for the Sochi’s Winter Olympic Games in 2014.

The Spanish monarch also met with other top Russian government officials, including President Medvedev, as well as with a group of leading Russian and Spanish business leaders, to discuss new steps and avenues for boosting the current level of economic interactions between both countries, both at the government and private business levels.
