Khodorkovsky amnesty and gubernatorial elections top Prokhorov’s presidential agenda

MOSCOW, Russia — Russian presidential aspirant Mikhail Prokhorov has listed an unconditional state amnesty for Mikhail Khodorskovsky, the former owner of Yukos oil giant currently serving a 14-year prison term on alleged fraud charges, reinstatement of the gubernatorial elections for regional leaders, full liberalization of political activities and a myriad of other landmark proposals as parts of his presidential agenda if he wins the political mandate to rule the country at the March 4, 2012 presidential election.

The multibillionaire, barred from running in the December 4 State Duma election in a Kremlin orchestrated power struggle at the helm of the pro-business Right Cause party, announced his political manifesto today in Moscow at a meeting with the so-called Initiative Group of supporters that will formally nominate him for the nation’s highest office.

“One of the first official decisions that I shall take as a Russian president will be granting amnesty for Khodorskovsky,” he added. “Others will include reducing the presidential term from six years to five years and legally institutionalize 10 years as the maximum term that anyone can stay in power as a Russian president, whilst registration of political parties will be based on a notification, rather than on an approval basis.”
