Russian Ombudsman receives Kremlin’s clarification on its mandate to protect businesses from state arbitrariness

MOSCOW, Russia - President Vladimir Putin has more clearly defined the Kremlin’s objectives for the Russian Entrepreneurs Protection Ombudsman, urging him to protect honest entrepreneurs from arbitrariness of the authorities, rather than lobbying for business interest groups

Addressing the Russian Entrepreneurs Protection Ombudsman Boris Titov, Putin said the new institution should prevent violations of honest entrepreneurs’ rights and their restorations if such rights are violated, and not engage in protection of business tycoons who violate the laws.

"Everyone wants state agencies to be effective in their work, and this forms the so-called business climate in our country,” he added. “And, this is the basic condition for attracting investment in the country, and without solving this problem, we shall not be able to develop our economy effectively.”

The president also said the Russian Entrepreneurs Protection Ombudsman Institution should not replace the court. "You need to find a niche in this system as we work together to change to establish a better business climate in the country."
