Russian government to toughen penalties for most hazardous traffic violations

MOSCOW, Russia — Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has announced the government’s plans to significantly increase the administrative and criminal liability for over speeding, running red lights, driving on opposite lanes and a raft of other most hazardous traffic offenses across the country.

Specifically, the prime minister proposed to increase the financial responsibility for the most dangerous traffic violations in Moscow and St. Petersburg to RUR500,000 and RUR250,000 in the other regions, while criminal penalties envisage setting the lower limit of imprisonment term of five years and increasing the upper limit  to 15 years for the same crimes.

“These penalties will affect those caught in drunken state," the prime minister noted. "In addition, the relevant state agencies have been ordered to explore the possibilities of temporary seizures of such drivers vehicles as parts of the official measures to enforce decisions on their administrative cases."
