RZD gets a new CEO as the former boss heads to the Russian senate


The new CEO of Russian Railways (RZD) is Oleg Belozerov, Russia's former deputy transportation minister. 

The ex-minister was plucked by the Russian government to replace Vladimir Yakunin, the outgoing CEO that had run the railways monopolist for almost 14 years, who is heading for the Russian senate in September.

Announcing the appointment of Belozerov, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev specifically highlighted the qualifications of RZD’s new chief executive in particular as well as his deep knowledge of the Russian transportation industry as a whole.

Belozerov, according to the prime minister, has in recent years become a highly competent specialist on the Russian transportation industry. 

“You really know this industry very well, and this became very clear during our discussions of the prevailing economic situation in the country and the position of Russian Railways,” the prime minister noted. “You know all the pluses, as well as all the difficulties, the situation with the budget and investment in the company,” he added.

“You are to take over the management of the company straightaway. Tomorrow, the handle-over-processes of the company will be finalized,” he noted. 

The prime minister also specially noted the work done by the outgoing CEO, saying the CEO did a lot to foster the development of the railways giant.

Yakunin, who is awaiting an appointment to membership of the Russian Federation Council by the Kaliningrad Region authorities, had been the CEO of Russian Railways since 2005.

Biography Oleg Belozerov, the Russian Railways CEO

Belozerova is 45 years old. A graduate of the famous St. Petersburg University of Economics and Finance, the new Russian Railways CEO had worked in various fields and management positions in several corporations, including Lenenergo, in the Office of the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Northwestern Federal District. Other jobs by the new RZD boss included being the CEO of Russian Fuel Co. the deputy head of the Federal Road Agency, and later to become the agency’s boss. In 2009 Belozerov became the deputy Russian transportation minister, rising to the position of the Russia’s first deputy transportation minister.
