Kremlin hopeful for equal partnership relations with Obama’s America

Commenting on the results of the U.S. election that propped Illinois first-term Senator Barack Obama to the White House on November 5, Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that Russia remains committed to building equal partnership relationships with the United States as stated in the Sochi Declaration which was approved by both Presidents Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush and reaffirmed by the Russian new president, Dmitry Medvedev, in his numerous contacts with the U.S. administration.

“The Sochi Declaration contains real forward-looking programs of actions. Specifically, it contains the basic cooperation principles such as equality, mutual benefits, consideration of each other’s interests and specific spheres of cooperation, including the war against international terrorism, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, organized economic crimes and the development of economic cooperation and contribution to the stability of global economy.”

The Russian foreign affairs minister said he hoped that the Sochi Declaration principles will find their continuation in developing robust bilateral relationship with the incoming administration. “It cannot be excluded that the Russian president and the U.S. president-elect will meet during the global financial summit of the world’s 20 largest economies scheduled later this month in Washington,” he said. “We shall be open for mutually respecting, honest and responsible dialog.”
